History of Morocco

Morocco has been inhabited since prehistoric times, with the Berbers being the indigenous people. The country has been influenced by Phoenicians, Romans, Arabs, and later European powers. The Idrisid dynasty founded the first Moroccan state in 788 AD. Morocco was never fully colonized, though France and Spain established protectorates from 1912-1956. Today, Morocco is a constitutional monarchy with King Mohammed VI as head of state since 1999.
